The R129 was consistently six-, eight-and twelve-cylinder engine offered. At the beginning there were 300 SL 300 SL-24 and the 500 SL in the price lists.

From 1992 it was then the first twelve-cylinder engine in the Mercedes Benz SL 600, the SL 600 is available. Gradually, the Mercedes Benz SL 600 was the more modern V6 and V8 engines from the S-Class. They had dual ignition and three valves per cylinder.
